Man faces charges of DUI, child endangerment after crashing moped with toddler passenger

(WJAR) — The Newport Police Department has charged a man with DUI and child endangerment after he allegedly crashed a moped with an 18-month-old toddler as a passenger.
Police said the crash happened Sunday night around 9:30 p.m. in the area of Spring Street and Dixon Street.
The department said 31-year-old Charles Fenwick crashed a moped into an unoccupied parked car.

When officers arrived, Fenwick was on the ground with an apparent leg injury, and the 18-year-old toddler was being held by a witness, according to the department.
“I really just wanted to get that baby out as fast as I possibly could,” said witness Heidi Soares. “He shouldn’t have had that baby with him on that scooter.”
Soares works at Artful Lodger Inn right near where the accident happened.
She said she heard the crash and then ran to help. Soares said she saw the baby under the bike.
“I grabbed him and I quickly looked him over, he was bleeding, crying, asking for his mom he was very scared,” said Soares. “I was just kind’ve telling him ‘you’re okay, you’re okay, everything’s okay.”
“We don’t want to see anybody on a moped or a motorcycle or even a bicycle riding around who’s intoxicated,” said Newport Police Lieutenant Joseph Carroll. “It’s really dangerous, there’s no helmet being worn on a moped, the passenger is required to be wearing a helmet, same as a motorcycle.”
The toddler was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Fenwick was first transported to Newport Hospital and then transported to Rhode Island Hospital.
The department said he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and the toddler is in stable condition.
Fenway is being charged with child endangerment, DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, reckless driving and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
