Faulkner (1806-1884) served in the U.S. House, 1851-1859 and 1875-1877, as Minister to France, 1860-1861, and on Stonewall Jackson's staff during the Civil War; Boteler (1815-1892) served in the U.S. House, 1859-1861, but lost several ante-bellum elections to Faulkner, in addition to this one in 1874.
