Description
Published in 1972 during a very controversial election season, Nixon, already had Watergate boiling around him, and the Republicans were in turmoil, Hubert Humphrey was representing the Democrats, already investigating Watergate. While Nixon, as history has shown, was sneaky he actually wasn’t a bad president. He ended Vietnam war, a very unpopular war. He opened China to trade and tourism, and he had his buddies break into the DNC HQ at Watergate. This guide doesn’t delve into any of that, but provides the republican and democratic platforms, the candidates, the issues of the day (how many haven’t changed at all?), and how we elect a president. That should still be on target as I don’t think any of those processes have changed. It also includes a section on young voters and black voters. Don’t forget, the Voting Rights Act was not passed until 1965. I wonder how many of today’s young people realize that. Please zoom in on the photos for details. This is a paper bound book in fine condition with a 1/3 circle that looks like a flaw in the printing process. The spine is sturdy, there are no tears, but some small creases. The back cover, which is pictured, shows reviews by notable news sources of the day including Walter Cronkite, Edwin Newman and Rosco Drummond. It would be most useful for someone studying political science, journalism, for teachers or collectors of political memorabilia. And it could be really interesting to see what the political parties positions were in 1972 compared to where they stand today. And a clear explanation of the democratic process. A valuable tool to help see a time shot of what led the way to where we are now. Measurements: 11x9” approximately.
